A Message from the Chairwoman

Dear 14th District Executive Committee Members, and fellow Republicans;

In just a few days, on August 7, the Michigan Republican Primary election will select the best candidates to be on the November ballot. Yes, support your favorite candidate. So few voters participate in the Primary election that every, single vote is magnified! Get out and VOTE!

After our Republican candidates are selected it is even more important that we come together to support the Primary winner. As happens each election cycle, some candidates “win” and some candidates “lose”. We all need to remember that any Republican will be better than a Democrat. So be prepared to rally in UNITY to elect the most conservative candidate we can----and that won’t be any Democrat!

We all know that Debbie Stabenow needs to go. Her voting record is awful. But we also “are represented” here in the 14th U.S. Congressional District by Brenda Lawrence. Take a moment to read her recent voting record shown below. You won’t believe it!

We can do much better by electing a Republican to replace Lawrence! Her Republican opponent is Marc Herschfus (R-Southfield). Vote for Marc on August 7, too, so that Lawrence can see that she’ll face a serious candidate in November!

Your 14th District Executive Committee passed a Resolution urging the Michigan House to pass House Bill 4499, otherwise known as the "Restriction of Application of Foreign Laws Act." Special thanks goes to Political Action Committee Chair Don Perry, and members Jerry Cameron, Linda Stulberg and Irving Ginsberg for their work to develop this Resolution. With the multicultural candidates we all see on the Democrat side this law is even more important. Anyone see the debate among the three Democrat candidates for Governor?

Pretty shocking. All the Democrat candidates were quite busy offering “free” college education, “free” healthcare, “free” everything! Who knew it was so easy? Now is not the time to be shy! Election of any of these Democrat candidates will take us directly back to the “lost decade” of Jennifer Granholm.

Really? Who actually thinks that would be a good thing? Everyone reading this newsletter has a “circle of influence”. Mention to that circle how AWFUL it would be to go back to that lost decade! Of course, we each have our favorite candidate on August 7. That said, who among us believes really believe that ANY Republican primary winner will be better than any Democrat? We all do!

The “remember in November” slogan is to remind us that not a single Democrat voted to allow taxpayers to keep more of their own hard earned income!! Not one Democrat! We need to tell all of our friends, co-workers, neighbors that Senator Debbie Stabenow joined with all Democrats who voted NO regarding Trump’s historic tax bill. Remember in November!

The fifth anniversary was just “celebrated” of Detroit’s becoming the largest municipal bankruptcy in history. Many have reported on the positive changes in Detroit since then. Detroit surely gets more than its fair share of media attention!

Our WONDERFUL Primary Candidates in 14th District races

With the Primary election season in just a few days, below is our best list of candidates for a variety of positions in the 14th District. Sorry if we missed someone because we support ALL our wonderful candidates.

It is HARD work to campaign for any office. All who do so have earned our respect for the commitment made. Here is our list of candidates running (as best as we have it).

American Laws in American Courts Resolution Passed

The 14th District Executive Committee recently passed a Resolution urging that the Michigan House pass House Bill 4499, otherwise known as the "Restriction of Application of Foreign Laws Act." See the press release regarding the Resolution here 14th District Resolution.

The 14th District Political Action Committee, led by Executive Committee member and PAC Committee Chair Don Perry, proposed the Resolution after taking a full year reaching out to various state legislators, with no results.

House Bill 4499 has been stalled in the House Law & Justice Committee, chaired by Representative Klint Kesto (current candidate for the U.S. House) and vice chaired by Representative Peter Lucido (current candidate for MI Senate District 8). Since April 2017 nothing has happened, despite numerous attempts to get the Committee’s leaders to: (a) pass the Bill for a full House vote; (b) rewrite the Bill and then pass it; or (c) move the Bill to another House committee for consideration.

Our Republican-controlled legislature's failure to act on this urgent matter flies in the face of our Republican national GOP platform, which affirms the supremacy of our U.S. Constitution. That RNC Platform includes an amendment, of the same spirit as House Bill 4499, which declared in part the following:

"Subjecting American citizens to foreign law is inimical to the spirit of the Constitution. It is one reason we oppose US participation in the International Criminal Court. There must be no use of foreign law by US courts in interpreting our Constitution and laws. Nor should foreign sources of law be used in state courts adjudication of criminal or civil matters."

The 14th District Executive Committee, in considering its Resolution, believes that it is imperative that Michigan undergird equal protection and due process of our unique American legal system that has long been the envy of the world.

Citizens cannot take for granted that the U.S. Constitution will “reign supreme” even in U.S. courts! There are already dozens of cases where U.S. courts have granted consideration to foreign laws. WHAT?!

We must remain vigilant so that Michigan courts do not defer to “multicultural sensibilities” and then extend as a “legal courtesy” any consideration of non-U.S (and non-MIchigan) laws. This is especially true when doing so contravenes and violates our U.S. and Michigan Constitutional rights and fundamental American public policy and values.

Given that this is election season where every candidate wants YOUR vote, now is the time to ask about this matter. Urge your elected officials (or candidates, if elected) to pass this important legislation. We all need to be assured that no foreign laws will erode our Constitutional freedoms.

Letter to the Editor: TV 4 (London) interview

Republican activists are encouraged to keep the conservative voice in the media’s mailbox (if not in their coverage).

To that end, after a barrage of negative media coverage following President Trump’s European trip, Oakland County activists went global to defend him. Bill Rauwerdink (West Bloomfield) a member of the 14th District Executive Committee, Scott Hagerstrom (Trump’s Michigan campaign director), Marian Sheridan (President of Lakes Area Tea Party), and Meshawn Maddock (co-founder of Michigan Trump Republicans) each spoke in a segment aired at 7 p.m. (London time) on July 17 on what in London is called Channel 4 TV News.

The television segment was recorded on the shores of beautiful Walled Lake. Watch the entire video or go directly to the local segment which starts at about 3:40 into the video. YouTube link is here https://youtu.be/TMDNcc2QZ6Y.

A companion Twitter release by the network had over 620,000 views as of the date of this newsletter. It also had over 12,000 likes and over 7,000 retweets. Talk about making a pro Trump splash!

Remember that during the election cycle the “news media” is eager to hear from alternate views. Don’t disappoint them! Write your letter to the local newspaper editor, call a radio program (WJR comes to mind), post some pro Trump messages on Facebook, etc.

Are you “too busy”?

Then don’t be surprised when the liberal voice is the only one you hear. If local volunteers can be on global television to support President Trump, then surely you can connect with your local newspaper or radio program! Do it now! Make the red wave happen in November!

Stabenow needs to go in November. Help to retire her!

Let’s Swing The Election Says State Committeeman Oestreich

Robert Oestreich (Farmington Hills), 14th Congressional District State Committeeman and District Committee Elections Chair, says it is time to use technology to “swing elections”. He submitted an article that outlines how to do that. Here is an excerpt:

There is a tremendous technological revolution happening right before us. Online video and audio are immediately accessible to everyone all over the world and this may be even more significant than the Gutenberg Revolution. People have restrictions on when, where and how long they can read and less restrictions on when, where and how long they can listen to audio or videos. The bandwidth limitations on cable news leave many stories to be explained in sixty seconds or less. Newsworthy and complicated stories need to be simplified into vagueness shared by an entertainer. Years ago if the media were to go after a political candidate in an attempt to destroy them people would accept the media’s message and move on to another candidate.

“How do conservatives reduce pain and suffering in the world, promote healthy discussion and swing an election,” asks Oestreich? He says the tool eGalt.io can be used to “attract people holding any geo-political ideologies will bring light to values that make America great. Executive Committee Member Profile: Jerry Kosmensky

Although he has been a Republican for more than half a century, Jerry Kosmensky grew up in a Democratic family.

But by the time he entered the business world in the late 1950s, “I could see a difference between the two parties.”

Since then, “it’s hard to believe how far left they’ve gone. It’s hard to believe anyone is a Democrat.”

It would be another 25 years, however, before Kosmensky became involved in Republican politics.

He was serving as treasurer of then - U.S. Rep. William Broomfield’s campaign when he asked the Congressman how he could become involved in the party. Broomfield advised him to contact Joe Knollenberg, who was then chairman of the Oakland County GOP.

Kosmensky has been active ever since, serving as precinct delegate, treasurer of the Oakland County party under Jim Alexander and a member of the OCRP 400 Club.

(Knollenberg succeeded Broomfield as Congressman. Both are deceased. Knollenberg was Oakland County party chairman from 1979 to 1982 and again from 1984 to 1986. Alexander was Oakland County party chairman from 1989 and 1994.)

Kosmensky also has been active in government, serving on the Orchard Lake City Council for 25 years, including time as mayor.

Kosmensky has been working as a builder for nearly 60 years, owning his own business since 1959. “I’m trying to retire,” he said in an interview as he drove to his office in Southgate. “But it’s hard to cut back, especially when you enjoy it.”

As a builder, Kosmensky says he has done “a little bit of everything,” including industrial buildings and redeveloping properties, “but I am basically a homebuilder.”

He is past president of both the Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan and the Michigan Association of Homebuilders.

Although Kosmensky attended the University of Michigan at Dearborn he did not attain a college degree. Born in what was then Farmington Township, he is a graduate of Farmington High School.

Now 89, Kosmensky is a longtime member of Edgewood Country Club and still golfs.

“I used to be good,” he says. But he points out that golf involves “a very unnatural swing” that often leads to back problems and arthritis. Kosmensky says he once had a handicap in the single digits.

Kosmensky laments that the 14th Congressional District is so heavily Democratic. He says the Republican Party needs to attract more minorities. He says he cannot understand why African Americans are so supportive of the Democrats.

Kosmensky, who is Jewish, also wonders: “why don’t our people support the Republican Party?”

“We just have to keep digging away a little at a time.”

Democrat Rep. Brenda Lawrence “Votes for Us” in Washington

Your Democratic 14th Congressional District U.S. Representative Brenda Lawrence (D-MI) has been busy in Washington, D.C. Here is a recap of several of her recent and shocking votes. Her role in supporting the Democrat Party line, obstructing President Trump and not really looking out for our Michigan values can be seen very clearly.

Her votes often are like this: think of a logical idea/opinion and then vote the opposite way. After considering her positions, please feel free to call her office at 202-225-5802:

Senate Bill 204 passed 250 to 169 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This establishes that a person diagnosed as being terminally ill has the “right to try” experimental drugs not yet approved by the FDA. (Thought the Democrats were “compassionate”?)
Senate Bill 2155 passed 258 to 159 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This relieves smaller banks (less than $10 billion in assets) from duties imposed by federal regulations for a variety of issues.
HB 2 (Young Amendment) passed 208 to 207 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This exempts Alaska from the federal “roadless forest” rule that limits road building in national forests.
HB 2 failed 198 to 213 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This bill would have required all able bodied recipients of food stamps to meet work, school or training requirements (with many exceptions).
HB 2 (Banks Amendment) passed 238 to 173 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This repeals the EPA’s rules that would expand its authority to regulate rivers, streams, and ditches under federal wetland laws.
HB 2 (Russell Amendment) failed 54 to 356 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This would have banned using federal grants to market beer, wine, distilled spirits, hard cider or other alcohol. (Just sayin’ why would tax dollars need to be used to promote booze?)
HB 2 (Faso Amendment) passed 222 to 192 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This gives states flexibility to contract administrative functions of the food stamp program to non-government entities.
HB 5895 (Blackburn Amendment) failed 155 to 262 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This would have reduced by 1% in the next fiscal year the amount of money spent on federal programs addressing energy and water.
HB 5895 (Tsongas Amendment) failed 201 to 217 with Lawrence voting FOR. This would have increased federal spending for overshore wind job training. Huh?
HB 3 passed 210 to 206 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This rescinded about $15 BILLIONS in authorized spending that was expired or was otherwise no longer needed. Really Brenda? Really?
HB 5895 (Gohmert Amendment) passed 212 ro 201 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This prohibits federal funds from being used to prepare, propose or promulgate any regulation about the “social cost” of carbon.
HB 2083 passed 288 to 116 with Lawrence voting AGAINST. This would permit three (3) states and several Indian tribes to kill a total of 100 or fewer sea lions to protect an endangered fish. Really. Our US Congress is voting on one hundred (100) or fewer fish. Is it worse that Lawrence objected to this? Hmm.
