Resolution in Opposition to the National Popular Vote

RESOLUTION OPPOSING NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE COMPACT

 

WHEREAS, The Platform of the Republican National Committee includes a declaration of
opposition to, and urges the repeal of, all state legislation that attempts to implement
the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact; and

WHEREAS, Seventeen of the 20 Republicans in the Michigan State Senate and 40 of the
57 Republican lawmakers in the Michigan State House signed a letter that labeled the
national popular vote proposal "a disastrous idea" that "should remain on the scrapheap
of American history"; and

WHEREAS, The Michigan Republican State Committee adopted a Resolution against the
National Popular Vote Compact in 2011 that was unanimous but for one vote; and

WHEREAS, The framers of the Federal Constitution rigorously sought an effective
compromise in the selection of the President that preserved both the principles of a
representative republic form of government AND the inherent Sovereignty of the States;
and

WHEREAS, The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, as adopted by several states,
contains no requirement that the participating states conduct their federal elections by
the same set of rules; and,

WHEREAS, the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, if implemented, would make
uncertain the election results for President and Vice-president since constitutional
scholars believe the state legislatures can decide how to cast their electoral votes after
the November general election; and,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the 14th Congressional District Republican Committee
opposes any attempt to undermine the rights of individual states in electing our President
through the Electoral College by way of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact;
and, further be it

RESOLVED, the 14th Congressional District Republican Committee does fully endorse
retaining the constitutionally approved and time-tested Electoral College by individual
states method of awarding electoral votes to candidates to win the office of President
United States of America; and be it further

RESOLVED, the 14th Congressional District Republican Committee strongly encourages all
Michigan state legislators and Michigan voters to reject the National Popular Vote
Interstate Compact.

As adopted by the 14th Congressional District Republican Committee on 09 November 2021
with a vote of 16 to 0.
